Maketewah Country Club - U.S. Open Local Qualifier Results
CINCINNATI – Current University of Cincinnati men’s golf players Davis Baxter (Nolensville, Tenn./Ravenwood High School) and Andrew Mayhew (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood High School) along with former Bearcat Emerson Newsome (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek High School) have advanced to play in a U.S. Open sectional qualifier after their performance Monday in a local qualifier at Maketewah Country Club in Bond Hill.
Baxter, a rising senior, tied four other golfers for fourth place at 1-under par 70 while Newsome, who graduated following the 2015-16 season, finished ninth at even par 71. Mayhew, a rising sophomore, had to play in an eight-person playoff after posting a 1-over 72. Two playoff holes later he outlasted Matthew Wetterich of Cincinnati to clinch a qualifier position.
Andy Roberts of Owensboro and Trey Shirley of Bowling Green shared first place with 3-under 68s.
Baxter, Newsome and Mayhew next will compete in a 36-hole U.S. Open sectional qualifier on June 5. The site will be announced at a later date.
The USGA is conducting 114 18-hole qualifiers in 44 states to determine which players advance to 36-hole sectional qualifying. Ten sectional qualifiers are scheduled in the United States on Monday, June 5, and for the 13th consecutive year, Japan and England will host sectional qualifying, both in late May.
The U.S. Open will be played at Erin Hills Golf Course, June 15-18, in Hartford, Wisconsin.
