Bearcats Qualify 12 Individuals, 2 Relays to NCAA East Preliminary
May 18, 2017

Accepted Lists (via NCAA): WOMEN | MEN

CINCINNATI - The selections for the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships were announced today with the University of Cincinnati well represented once again on the list of qualified athletes and relays that will compete in one of two regional competitions next week with a shot at the NCAA Championship Finals in Eugene, Ore. (June 8-11) on the line. The Bearcats will travel south to Lexington, Ky., where the University of Kentucky is set to play host to the NCAA East Preliminary Round meet at the UK Track & Field Complex May 25-27 (Thursday-Saturday).

// BY THE NUMBERS
The women saw seven individuals qualify for eight competitions with both relays (4x100m & 4x400m) also earning berths into the meet. The men will send five individuals to compete in six events. The women that have earned berths into the meet include Haisha Bisiolu, Loretta Blaut, Brooke Catherine, Annette Echikunwoke, Deanna Gesicki, Tiona Lattimore, Kellsa Mbah, Bryana Robinson and Ashley Williams while the men’s list included Alex Bloom, Austin Edwards, Dan Huben, Macklin Tudor and Adrian Valles. Up to four more names could be added on the women’s list as relay alternates.

// HOW IT WORKS
Making the regional meet means an individual athlete holds a mark ranking him/her among the Top 48 in the region (east or west) following a national declaration deadline (Tuesday) with injuries/illness/medial scratches by Sunday making room for the next few names on the list in those events. Once the meet begins (May 25), here is how advancement takes place for the Bearcats:
- 400m: 48 in First Round compete with Top 3 in each heat plus the next 6 fastest times advance to the quarterfinal round in Lexington where the Top 3 in each heat and the next 3 fastest times advance to Oregon
- Relays: There is only one round of racing in Lexington with the Top 3 in each heat plus the next 3 fastest moving on to Oregon
- LJ, SP, DT, HT: The 48 jumpers/throwers each get three attempts with the overall Top 12 advancing directly to Oregon
- HJ, PV: The 48 in the vertical jumps will continue to clear bars until only 12 remain, all of which advance to Oregon (ties will be broken)

// DOUBLE & TRIPLE DIPPING
Six athletes have qualified to the meet in more than one event with five of those coming on the women’s side. For the women, Robinson and Lattimore could have triple duty as the each qualified individually in the 400m dash as well as members of both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Bisiolu also qualified as a member of both relays while Mbah, a member of the 4x100m relay, will also compete in the long jump. The final woman in multiple events is Echikunwoke, who will compete in the hammer and shot put. For the men, Tudor also will throw in a pair of events, including the shot put and discus.

// TWO RELAYS
For the second year in a row, the Bearcats women have qualified both relays to the East meet. Last year marked the first time a relay had qualified since 2011. Should either relay advance to Eugene, it would mark the first time UC has qualified a relay to the national final, something that has not happened indoors and outdoors by both the men and the women.

// YOUTH MOVEMENT
Two true freshmen Bearcats have qualified to compete in individual events in Lexington, including Lattimore (women’s 400m dash) and Edwards (men’s long jump). Lattimore enters the meet tied for 47th in her event and is the eighth rookie on the list while Edwards sits 25th overall and is the fourth-ranked rookie in his event.

// GETTING BACK TO EUGENE
Three Bearcats are set to compete this week with hopes of getting back to the national meet for the second year in a row. Last year, Blaut finished sixth in the high jump in Eugene while Echikunwoke was eighth in the hammer and Valles competed in the pole vault. If Valles can advance to the national meet again, it will mark his sixth-consecutive trip (indoors included) as a member of the program.
